Do really #AllLivesMatter?

I have been captivated by the reaction on social media to the murder of George Floyd by the knees of a police officer. It was nice to see so much support towards Mr Floyd's family and anger towards the state employee that is engaged to protect lives and not end them.

A campaign #BlackLivesMatter started doing the rounds and different reactions were triggered. What that really made me think is one claiming that the campaign should be named differently and target All Lives Matter.

Yes, I do agree that #AllLivesMatter and not only, even the animals, environment – land, sea, skies and space. However, one has to reflect why at this moment #BlackLivesMatter is more important.

  • Yes #BlackLivesMatter because I haven't heard of white people in distress at sea left to die.

  • Yes #BlackLivesMatter because I haven't heard of drive-bys killing white people when walking back home at night.

  • Yes #BlackLivesMatter because any abuse of power makes a victim's live misery no matter what race, gender or belief.

I do agree that lives shouldn't be label with colour, gender or belief, however, to learn one needs also to look at reality. The truth is that in the last months, decisions taken by so-called democratic countries have discriminated in a way or another against minorities and weaker sectors of society.

This doesn't necessarily include physical violence but discrimination in various forms is ripe and kicking. It's not about the colour of the skin, gender or belief. The fight is against a system that doesn't give a fuck about who falls out.

Look at the past and learn – they say, and the past taught us that when discrimination is ripe bigger issues are not a-far.
